About Us

What is Salford City Radio? Well, it's much, much more than a radio station. We are the only radio station in the world that is just for Salford, and the great people of our city. But, we are also different from every other station that you can hear in the city because we are a not-for-profit community radio station. This means that we do not exist to simply attract more listeners than anybody else. We exist to offer our city an exclusively local radio service that promotes local events and focuses on local news and sport. We are also famous for our fantastic taste in music.

Did you know that every single presenter on Salford City Radio is a volunteer? It's true! All these great radio stars are actually doing it for the love of it. This amazes most people because we sound so professional. In total, we have 85 volunteers doing programmes each week covering everything from local sport, news, unsigned bands to specialist music shows, talk programmes and much, much more. No two days are the same on 94.4FM and that's why our radio station is so exciting! We are not the music wallpaper that so many other stations aim to be. We refuse to be background noise. What would be the point!? We pack our output with local information such as the What's-On Guide, Job Finder, Spotlight adverts and the latest news on your doorstep every single day. And it doesn't stop there! We offer free advertising and promotion for all local not-for-profit organisations and promote upcoming events on an hourly basis. Our incredible commitment to Salford life was acknowleged brilliantly when we won the runner up prize of "Community Business of the Year 2008" at the prestigious Salford Business Awards after just 6 months on the air! This is the radio revolution! Volunteering « Jump to top of screen

Salford City Radio is presented exclusively by volunteers from Salford. Our volunteering criteria is very simple. You must be aged between 16 and 99, live or work in Salford. You must have a passion for Salford life and have a real desire to promote the wealth of activities that are going on in the City in their many guises. We are not on the look out for music-only DJ's, but people with something to say.

So, if you qualify for that bit, read on! We have many opportunities at Salford City Radio which can help build experience, confidence, improve your CV and teach you brand new skills in a fully operational broadcasting environment. You could learn many areas of broadcasting, from presenting, news reading, journalism, interviewing, djing, editing, production, marketing, sales, commercial production...the list goes on and on! So, get in touch today and send us a brief outline of what you would like to do along with your CV and full contact details. The address to send to is :
Steve Suttie, Station Manager, 94.4FM Salford City Radio, Radio House, Salford Civic Centre, Chorley Road, Swinton. M27 5AW

Spotlights « Jump to top of screen
Salford City Radio Spotlights appear on this station every hour. They are free adverts for community groups and can last for one to three minutes. The idea is that you can promote your not-for-profit organisation across the city, explain what it is you do, appeal for support and ultimately offer further information on your services by publicising your website or other contact details. We plan to build a bank of literally hundreds of spotlight editions and we want to hear from you so that we can record yours and get your vital messages on the air across Salford. Whether you are a sports team appealing for new player or a charity that needs some support, or perhaps you are planning to set up a new group... whatever your needs, a Salford City Radio Spotlight can help. Our only rules are that your advert does not exceed three inutes and that it is not date sensitive. This means that we could not provide your group with a spotlight to promote a jumble sale because it would be very tricky to organise. That does not mean we would not promote your one-off events. Please send details of any events you wish to publicise on Salford City Radio to info@ salfordcityradio.org or post us a note to Radio House, Salford Civic Centre, Chorley Road, Swinton, M27 5AW. We look forward to hearing from you and helping you to continue making a fabulous contribution to Salford life

FAQ « Jump to top of screen

WHAT IS 94.4FM SALFORD CITY RADIO AND HOW IS IT DIFFERENT FROM OTHER STATIONS?
94.4FM Salford City Radio is a low transmission power, not-for-profit community radio station with volunteer presenters and technicians. This means that the radio station does not operate in order to generate revenue, but to offer a genuine local radio service that is concerned primarily with Salford and our people, as well as offering unique training and volunteering opportunities in a real life FM radio station. Most other stations that you can pick up in Salford are commercial radio stations that exist to make profits from advertising revenue, or BBC stations that are paid for via the TV License. Community Radio is the new “third tier” of local radio.

ARE THERE ANY OTHER COMMUNITY RADIO STATIONS IN THE AREA?
Not in Salford, but almost all of Greater Manchester’s local areas now have their very own community radio stations, and all offer fantastic volunteer opportunities for anybody who wishes to help make great radio. There is Tameside Radio, ALL FM for Ardwick, Longsight and Levenshulme, Wythenshawe FM, Pure Radio in Stockport, Bolton FM (coming on air soon), North Manchester Radio (coming on air soon), Gaydio Radio (coming on air soon,) Oldham Community Radio and Crescent Radio for Rochdale.

WHERE CAN I LEARN MORE ABOUT COMMUNITY RADIO?
Community Radio in the UK is regulated by OFCOM and supported by the Community Media Association. For more info, click the following links... http://www.ofcom.org.uk/radio/ifi/rbl/commun_radio/   and www.commedia.org.uk

IS 94.4FM SALFORD CITY RADIO OWNED AND RUN BY SALFORD CITY COUNCIL?
No. Salford City Radio is completely independent from the City Council. However, we are based within the Civic Centre site, and we have benefited from over £210,000 in funding from the council! We are extremely fortunate to have the support of Salford City Council because nationally, the new and emerging community radio sector of which we are a part is struggling to attract the support of their local authority.

CAN I ADVERTISE MY BUSINESS ON SALFORD CITY RADIO?
Yes you can. Salford City Radio is a not for profit business, so we can offer amazing deals to local businesses because we only need to recoup our operating costs. For more info, click on the Advertising link above.

HOW MANY LISTENERS DO YOU HAVE?
This is one of the most popular questions that we are asked – and is also the hardest to answer! The truth is that we do not know how many listeners we have at any one time, and because we are such a different radio experience from other commercial and BBC stations, we cannot afford the expensive audience research that the Greater Manchester wide stations can buy through RAJAR (http://www.rajar.co.uk/) However, we do have a potential audience reach of almost 300,000 people in Salford and beyond.

HOW DO I PROMOTE SOMETHING THAT IS GOING ON IN SALFORD?
We are committed to assisting all not for profit organisations with free publicity for events and promotions. E-mail your details to info@salfordcityradio.org and we'll get them on air - no fuss! If you wish to promote a commercial enterprise, see next question

.I CANNOT PICK UP SALFORD CITY RADIO ON MY FM RADIO, YET I LIVE IN SALFORD...WHY?
Most people living in the city of Salford can pick us up without any problems, but we are aware of several areas in the City where our signal is poor, and even non-existent. We are working very hard to find a solution to the transmission problems and we are extremely hopeful that we will be covering every corner of the City with a strong signal early in 2009. We apologise for any inconvenience that this causes.

WHAT IS YOUR MUSIC POLICY?
We don’t have one!  We play a wide variety of music genres on 94.4FM Salford City Radio. You can expect to hear the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and various music from the present day, including indie, rock, dance, R&B, classical and more.

DO YOU PLAY UNSIGNED BAND / ARTISTS MUSIC?
Of course, we love getting local bands in the studio for interviews and acoustic sessions. We welcome CD’s, gig guides and biogs from all local unsigned bands as we have several unsigned programmes on the schedule, so send your music in and we’ll get you on the air! Send your press pack to: Unsigned, Salford City Radio, Radio House, Salford Civic Centre, Chorley Road, Swinton, Manchester, M27 5AW.

IF I MISSED A SHOW, CAN I LISTEN AGAIN?
Unfortunately, we do not have this facility although we do have podcasts available on the site.

WHAT IS YOUR ADDRESS?
Salford City Radio, Radio House, Salford Civic Centre, Chorley Road, Swinton, Manchester, M27 5AW.

WHO DESIGNED YOUR  WEBSITE?
It was designed by our Studio Manager & DJ Chris Brophy

WHO DESIGNED YOUR GREAT LOGO?
